Clarksville, TN is the county seat of Montgomery County and the fifth largest city in the state of Tennessee. The city was incorporated in 1785 and named for General George Rogers Clark, frontier fighter and Revolutionary War hero and brother of William Clark of Lewis and Clark
Known as the Queen of the Cumberland, Clarksville is the home of Fort Campbell home of the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles. The 101st is the only U.S. Army division with two aviation brigades, and one of the most prestigious and decorated divisions in the U.S. Army.
In recent decades, the size of Clarksville has doubled and with the creation of Intersta
te 24 which made the area prime for development. Today much of the growth along U.S. Highway 79 is commercial and retail. . In 1913, the Lillian Theater, now called the Roxy, Clarksville’s first “movie house” for motion pictures, was opened on Franklin and sat more than 500 people. Today the Roxy Theater hosts plays and performances weekly and has been used as a backdrop for Sheryl Crow’s Grammy-award winning song All I Wanna Do.
Clarksville has the distinction of being home to the oldest bank in the state, the Northern Bank established in 1854, now Regions Bank; the state’s oldest newspaper, The Leaf-Chronicle, established in 1808, and the only bank in the world established and operated entirely by women, the Women’s Bank of Tennessee that opened in 1919.

Clarksville is located on the northwest edge of the Highland Rim, which surrounds the Nashville Basin, and is 45 miles northwest of Nashville.
Clarksville was founded on the Cumberland River near the confluence of the Cumberland and the Red River. The Cumberland flows downstream from Nashville, some 40 miles southeast of Clarksville. From its beginnings, the river was the city’s commercial lifeline. Flat boats and, by the 1820s, steamboats carried cotton, oats, soybeans and tobacco, downstream to the Ohio River and up the Ohio to Pittsburgh.

Clarksville is served commercially by Nashville International Airport but also has a small airport, Outlaw Field, located 10 miles north of downtown. Outlaw Field accommodates nearly 40,000 private and corporate flights a year, and is also home to a pilot training school and a few small aircraft companies. Clarksville was recently recognized by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation as a “Walk with Me Tennessee” community for its pedestrian friendliness. The “Walk with Me Tennessee” program strives to increase awareness of alternate transportation in order to improve the health of Tennesseans, reduce environmental impacts and help citizens save money in fuel costs. In addition to the 30 parks throughout the Clarksville, the city also features community centers and special programs for young and old alike.
