Settled around 1784 it was not until the completion of the Old Hickory Dam in 1954, that the city of Hendersonville started to grow into the most populous city of Sumner County and also one of the most populous suburbs of Nashville, along with Franklin and Murfreesboro
It was first incorporated in July 1969 and Hendersonville officially began operation August 1, 1969. Old Hickory Lake is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and features eight marinas, two Corps-operated campgrounds, and 41 boat access sites, as well as the Old Hickory Lake Arboretum.
