Settled around 1784 it was not until the completion of the Old Hickory Dam in 1954, that the city of Hendersonville started to grow into the most populous city of Sumner County and also one of the most populous suburbs of Nashville, along with Franklin and Murfreesboro
It was first incorporated in July 1969 and Hendersonville officially began operation August 1, 1969. You can not talk about Hendersonville recreation without talking about Old Hickory Lake. Old Hickory Lake is formed by the Old Hickory Lock and Dam located on the Cumberland River at mile 216.2 in Sumner and Davidson Counties, The dam and lake are named after President Andrew Jackson (nicknamed “Old Hickory”), who lived in the vicinity, at The Hermitage.
Old Hickory Lake is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and features eight marinas, two Corps-operated campgrounds, and 41 boat access sites, as well as the Old Hickory Lake Arboretum
